OpenAI buys Pierre, Meta buys Conductor: the race for the coding agent toolchain

OpenAI buys Pierre, Meta buys Conductor: the race for the coding agent toolchain

Two of the largest AI companies bought developer tool startups on the same day. On 4 November 2026, OpenAI announced it will acquire Pierre Computer Company, the company behind the Git service Code Storage. Hours later, Axios reported that Meta had acquired Conductor, an app that lets a developer run several coding agents at once. Conductor confirmed the deal in a post on its site, and Meta confirmed it to TechCrunch without further comment. Financial terms were not disclosed for either deal.

The two companies sit at different points of the same workflow. Pierre stores and tracks code that agents write. Conductor coordinates the agents that write it.

What OpenAI is buying

OpenAI says Codex already uses two of Pierre's open-source libraries: Trees, for browsing a project's files, and Diffs, for reviewing changes. Anyone who has reviewed a change in the Codex app has used them, according to the announcement. Pierre also recently released Highlights, a syntax highlighter that updates as a developer types or an agent streams code.

The larger piece is Code Storage. Pierre's product page describes it as a distributed storage system built on Git, with APIs designed for machines rather than people. Apps can create repositories on demand, expose their own clone and push endpoints, and sync with GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket. Pierre lists a repository size limit of 32 TB, a 99.99% uptime SLA and usage-based pricing, starting at $0.005 per GB per hour for hot storage.

OpenAI ties the deal to Pando, the in-house source control backend it described earlier in the week (our coverage). The stated goal is to cover software work "from the first branch an agent creates" to deployment, inside Codex.

What OpenAI commits to:

  • Pierre's open-source projects stay open source, and OpenAI will keep contributing to them.
  • Code Storage customers can keep using the service after closing, while its features move into Codex.
  • Closing depends on customary conditions, including regulatory approvals. Until then, the two companies remain separate.

OpenAI first gave the news to Axios, which framed it as a move against Microsoft's GitHub. That framing is Axios's, not OpenAI's: the announcement does not mention GitHub, and it does not say OpenAI plans to offer public code hosting.

What Meta is buying

Conductor was founded in 2024 by Charlie Holtz (CEO) and Jackson de Campos (CTO), according to Axios. Its Mac app runs several coding agents at once, each in an isolated copy of the codebase, and lets the developer review and merge what they produce. SiliconANGLE reports that supported agents include Claude Code, Codex and Cursor, which users pay for through their own subscriptions and keys. Conductor does not build its own models: TechCrunch notes the agents come from labs such as Anthropic and OpenAI.

SiliconANGLE adds that Conductor says more than 100,000 people use it, that it raised a $22 million Series A in March from Spark Capital and Matrix, and that Meta engineers were already using the product before the deal. Sources told Axios that Meta expects the team's speed at shipping to help it build its next generation of AI coding products.

What changes for Conductor users

Unlike Pierre's customers, Conductor users face a wind-down. The announcement sets out the timeline:

  • 4 November: no new sign-ups or downloads. Existing pro users keep pro features for free.
  • 13 November: Conductor Cloud workspaces become read-only. Active subscribers get a refund.
  • 20 November: Conductor Cloud shuts down and user data starts being deleted.
  • Early 2027: the local Mac app stops receiving new models and critical fixes.

Conductor says it has built a way to move cloud workspaces to a local Mac, and that it will have "something new" for users early next year. Anyone with work in Conductor Cloud has until 20 November to export it.

A pattern, not a one-off

Axios notes that OpenAI also announced plans in June to acquire Ona, a startup that runs cloud coding environments and orchestrates agents. With Pierre, OpenAI now owns or is buying pieces of where agent code runs, where it is stored and how it is reviewed. Meta, which released the open-weights Muse Spark Open model for coding and agent work on 15 October according to SiliconANGLE, now has a team that built an interface for running other companies' agents side by side.

For developers, the short-term effects are concrete. Code Storage users keep their service for now. Conductor users have two weeks to move their cloud work. Both teams' next products will ship inside much larger companies.
